Democratic Party of Hawaii hosts a Candidate Forum today, July 16, 2016, at the Pahoa Community Center.
The forum is set to begin at 1 PM at Pahoa Community Center, with the Dist. 4 Council candidates going first from 1 to 2 PM, Mayoral candidates on second shortly after 2 PM, and the Dist. 5 Council candidates on from about 4:15 to 5 PM.
Candidates will be given two minutes to introduce themselves and tell why they are running for the office they’re pursuing. The program will be moderated by Pahoa businessman Dean Kelley, owner of Pahoa Used Bookstore, and the questions generated by HCDP Dist. 4 voters will be posed by representatives of each of lower Puna’s 4 precincts. You will have 2 and a half minutes to answer the questions. There will be no rebuttals but the precinct rep may ask a followup question if your response is unclear. Those followups need to be completed in 30 seconds.
A timekeeper will hold up a 30-second visual warning, then a PAU sign, followed by a bell to end your response.
There are approximately 12 sets of questions, some of which have 2 or 3 specific inquiries so the context of the question(s) is understood.
Candidates are invited to bring such campaign materials as brochures, bios, bumper stickers but not yard signs or banners as the venue is pretty limited. We would also appreciate candidates not trying to make the event a campaign rally by having squads of supporters showing up in campaign shirts. Our goal is to help enlighten the citizens of Puna and the Big Island with the issues and potential solutions our candidates have to offer.
